Creative duo Jonathan Kunz and Elizabeth Pich are back with their best comics of the year compiled in the latest War And Peas collection. For 2024 the artists have chosen 32 of their funniest and most thought-provoking comics. Reflecting on the selection process, they wrote. Choosing the best comics for 2024 was like sifting through a pile of existential dread but this time with glitter on top. Themes like AI anxieties eco-guilt and the universal struggle of picking a streaming platform stood out. We also saw a surprising love for comics featuring snacks, which says a lot about humanity’s priorities. If you’re unfamiliar with War And Peas, it’s a delightful comic series known for its unexpected twists and wide range of themes from aliens and witches to relationships the moon landing, and much more.

In an interview, the creators shared insights into whether there are any new or unexpected themes in this year’s War And Peas collection that they hadn’t explored before. The artists explained This year we found ourselves drawn to the concept of time, not in the grand we’re all hurtling toward entropy but in how time bends and stretches in small strange ways. Like how a two-minute microwave countdown feels endless, while a meaningful conversation with a friend passes in a blink. Our comics played with these little moments of temporal dissonance asking questions like. What if the universe’s best secrets are hidden in loading screens?

When asked about unique creative blocks or breakthroughs in 2024 that reshaped their approach to storytelling and illustration Jonathan and Elizabeth shared Oh there were blocks. One afternoon in June, we both sat staring at a blank sketchbook for four hours, convinced it was mocking us. The breakthrough didn’t come from some grand revelation but when we realized the blank page wasn’t mocking us it was just blank. We understood that storytelling doesn’t always have to be clever or complex sometimes it’s enough for it to simply exist. After that, our approach became gentler as if we’d permitted ourselves to let the stories come to us instead of chasing them.

War and Peas is known for blending humor with sharp often poignant or satirical commentary. We asked the creators if there were any specific moments in 2024 where striking that balance felt especially challenging or rewarding. The creators replied This balance feels like juggling a flaming torch a rubber chicken and a live goldfish. Sometimes the goldfish flops right into the torch and we’re left wondering if humor and poignancy were ever meant to coexist in the first place.
