In an interview, the artist shared how she came up with the storylines for her comics. The inspiration for the comics comes from my past relationship with my partner who has given me the okay and from my friends as well. Sometimes, I’ll be chatting with friends and think Oh this is a good comic idea. Almost anything can inspire a strip and friends have even asked me to create comics based on situations they’ve experienced. Her personal experiences and everyday conversations play a big role in the creative process behind her work.

Basura’s animals are incredibly expressive, showcasing a wide range of emotions. We asked her to share her process for bringing these characters to life. I love cartoons, so my facial expressions tend to be goofy she explained. I also don’t like to stay ‘on model’; my characters can change from moment to moment, and I enjoy that. It helps to act out the emotions with my face as I draw it brings the expressions to life on paper. Her approach adds a unique and lively touch to her comics, making each character feel dynamic and full of personality.

Basura began her comic series in 2020, and we were curious to know what the most rewarding feedback or experience has been from her followers. I started my comic series during the pandemic when I was feeling isolated as a way to bond with my partner and also vent some frustrations, she shared. The most rewarding thing is that people like my work and remember small Easter eggs and random details that I might not even recall. It’s touching. Some followers even remembered a character months after I hadn’t drawn them. It’s strange what people choose to remember or connect with what Basura wrote. The connections she’s made with her audience have been incredibly meaningful to her.

Lastly, the artist shared how her environment and culture influence her work and the themes she chooses for her comics. I’m based in LA, and I have a love-hate relationship with the city love my friends, but hate the drive mentality she explained. I think living here has made me feel freer about expressing LGBT themes in my comics and connecting with people who enjoy my work in real life, which is amazing. Some of my comics are very LA-centric, like the one about parking validation. I’m originally from New Jersey, so themes from there also make their way into my work. Her personal experiences and the places she’s lived have shaped her unique storytelling style.
