We caught up with Jason Shyang to learn more about his creative process and what drives his work. He shared that his process is pretty typical. Like most content creators, my process is ideation draft inking coloring posting. The hardest part is the ideation process; this is when writer’s block hits the hardest. I believe ideas come from the things and people around us. I also sometimes find inspiration from social media. It’s fascinating to see how he pulls from his everyday surroundings to create his relatable and humorous comics.

When asked how he stays motivated and inspired during creative slumps Jason shared that he takes breaks and steps away from his work. We need input from our surroundings when we’ve been outputting too much it helps recharge our brains and gives us a pause from the draining effects of the creative process. He also mentioned that the most exhausting part of his work is dealing with the constantly shifting algorithms and the changing preferences of social media users. That’s why I make sure to stay open to different types of content and new ways of expressing my stories.
