What if you found yourself in hell after the end of your journey? While most of us are certain that we’ll all leave this world one day, it’s tough to imagine what awaits us on the other side truly. Hell and heaven are two of the most widely known possibilities for the afterlife, and artist Burly, creator of the comic series The Immortal Grind, explores these themes in his unique and often humorous way. Burly’s comics often focus on hell and its quirky inhabitants including characters like the Grim Reaper the Devil and his small but mischievous assistants. While the subject matter might sound dark, Burly’s lighthearted approach ensures his comics are full of humor and charm, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. If you’re a fan of his work, be sure to check out part 1 of the ongoing series for more hilarious takes on the afterlife.

A little over a year ago, Burly shared some insights into his background and creative journey. My background is in graphic design, with a focus on vector-based designs like logos and icons he explained. I decided to start a webcomic to gain more experience with digital drawing and the tools that come with it. This transition from graphic design to webcomics allowed Burly to experiment with new styles and techniques ultimately leading to the creation of his popular series The Immortal Grind, where he blends dark themes with humor and quirky characters.

When it comes to explaining the theme of the afterlife in his comics Burly has a unique perspective. In my comic, I imagine the afterlife as not so glamorous, kind of mirroring the daily grind people go through here on Earth. Is it really like that? Let’s hope not he said with a chuckle. This slightly dark yet humorous take on the afterlife is reflected in his bio, which simply reads Chronicling the daily life of the afterlife. It’s this clever mix of the mundane and the surreal that gives his comics their charm turning what could be a heavy topic into something light-hearted and fun.

The world can feel like a pretty scary place these days. What was supposed to be the roaring ’20s quickly turned into a global pandemic, and if there’s anything we’ve learned from all of it it’s that we have to be ready for anything even the possibility of the world’s foretold destruction. Given the uncertainty around us maybe it’s time to take a page out of Burly’s comics and start thinking about what might await us in the afterlife.
His darkly humorous take on the afterlife where daily life mirrors the grind of our world provides a unique way to reflect on the unexpected twists life and death could bring. While we may not know what the future holds Burly’s comics offer a reminder that even in the face of the unknown a little humor can go a long way.
