Susie Esse, originally from Brisbane and now residing in Sydney Australia has always had a passion for art. I’m a millennial who grew up drawing the original 151 Pokémon and reading Garfiel she shared. When asked about what inspired her to use comics as a medium to express her life and thoughts Susie explained that comics allow her to distill a story feeling or joke into its simplest form. Just the essentials. I take my sprawling thoughts and spend days mulling over the best way to get my point across in as few panels as possible. Her process of simplifying complex ideas is what makes her work so engaging and relatable offering humor and insight in its purest form.

Susie Esse shared that her main goal with her comics is for people to feel seen and understood. Everybody just wants to feel seen she explained. Through her work, she hopes to create a space where her audience can relate to the humor and moments depicted offering a sense of connection and recognition in the everyday experiences she portrays.

Susie Esse opened up about how social media, particularly Instagram has shaped her journey as an artist. She explained how posting her comics online has made her more flexible with her work. Posting my art online forces me to be less precious about it she said. People will see it and have their connection or interpretation something I can’t control. She mentioned how her comics sometimes get shared or translated, even altering their meaning along the way. Despite this, Susie embraces it saying If people have a personal connection to the art then I guess I’m doing it right.

A significant part of Susie Esse’s earlier comics featured her beloved soul cat Penny who passed away last year. Her grief over the loss was deeply personal and Susie found solace in her Instagram community. Grieving a pet can be lonely she shared. No one outside your immediate household can truly understand the loss. Posting comics about her grief allowed Susie to connect with others who were mourning their pets. The response was overwhelming, with an outpouring of love and understanding. There are a lot of people out there hurting. We didn’t know each other’s pets but we understood each other’s pain. This experience helped Susie embrace her authenticity in her work. I used to worry about drawing what I thought people wanted to see but once I let my guard down, I noticed my engagement went up. People can always tell when you’re being real.
