Mojo Rose, the artist behind Summers Off Comics creates funny and relatable webcomics about the life of a teacher. When asked about what inspired her to start making comics based on her experiences as a teacher she shared, I started creating comics about being a teacher while I was learning to become one. My credentialing program was no joke and to be honest I had never worked with kids before thankfully it turns out I like them. To process everything that was happening, I started drawing little one-panel comics about my time as a student teacher. As I spent more time in the classroom, I began to see the joy, chaos, and frustration of teaching and I wanted to capture it in a comic that other teachers could relate to. At the time it didn’t seem like there was much conversation about what classrooms were really like.

When asked about how she comes up with ideas for her comics and whether they are based on real-life situations in the classroom, Mojo Rose shared Some of the comics are 100% real-life events. I’ve found that it’s pretty hard to base all the jokes solely on what happens in the classroom. While there are plenty of moments worth laughing at most of them have that ‘you had to be there’ quality. I’d say a good portion of the comics come from my anxieties or frustrations, and it helps to highlight the ridiculousness of it all.

When asked about the most surprising or rewarding feedback she’s received from her followers Mojo Rose shared I’ve gotten so much support over the years. Some of the best feedback has been teachers telling me they post my comics in their school break rooms or that my comics feel very real. I once received a comment on a comic about burnout this was during COVID-19 when someone thanked me because they had been beating themselves up over the mistakes they were making and seeing my comic about the same issue gave them some relief. Those kinds of comments mean the most to me.
