Rusty, a Boston-based writer and artist is the talent behind the webcomic Bummer Party. With a sharp sense of humor, Rusty shares their comics with a global audience of random strangers on the internet. When asked about their creative approach, Rusty explained, I just want people to laugh! There are a lot of comic artists out there getting people to think or feel some deeper emotion and that’s great but I just want people to get a good chuckle when they read something I created. Any additional emotions are purely coincidental. With a focus on pure lighthearted comedy, Bummer Party delivers witty and relatable comics designed to brighten your day.

Rusty shared that it took months of hard work before he felt confident enough to share his art. Like many artists, the early stages were filled with trial and error. What kept him going? The gradual improvement he saw with each new comic. Seeing that tangible progress was helpful Rusty explained. Watching each comic improve just a bit over the last one kept me pushing myself to keep going. This dedication to growth and persistence has shaped Bummer Party into the witty and engaging webcomic it is today.

Rusty has no shortage of ideas when it comes to creating comics. He keeps a running list of future concepts but not all of them make it to the finish line. If I’m feeling pumped about an idea, I try to sketch it out pretty fast otherwise, it usually ends up in that never-ending pile of ideas I might never fully develop he shared. When inspiration runs low, Rusty revisits his old notes for a spark. I go back and explore old ideas when I’m feeling tapped out or looking for something quick to knock out. This ever-growing collection of ideas ensures that Bummer Party continues to bring fresh, witty, and entertaining comics to fans.

One of Rusty’s favorite topics to explore in Bummer Party is how people interact on the internet. As a frequent Reddit user, he finds endless inspiration in the platform’s unique social dynamics. Reddit, more than any other social network, seems to exacerbate the Very Online ways people interact with each other and I love it Rusty shared. People will respond to the most innocuous things with just complete and utter vitriol. It’s fascinating to me. By capturing the quirks absurdity and sometimes chaotic nature of online conversations, Rusty turns internet culture into a source of sharp relatable humor for his readers.
