We reached out to Ray Lux to learn more about his creative journey and what inspired him to start creating comics. “I’ve loved newspaper comics since I was a kid. Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side were my favorites, he shared. When asked about his choice of the 4-panel format, Ray explained that he typically sticks to this layout because it’s perfect for social media. I feel like people are less likely to swipe through carousels especially long ones. I prefer the whole comic to be visible all at once, just like the classic Sunday comics, he said.

We asked Ray about the inspiration behind the ideas and themes for his comics. I’ve always been a skeptic, which led to my interest in conspiracy theories and cryptids, Ray shared. I think things like space aliens and Bigfoot are more likely to exist than ghosts or demons. But even so, it’s all so ridiculous to me that I can’t help but make fun of it.

Ray shared that he’s been working as a creative professional in the advertising industry for nearly a decade. I started posting all sorts of artsy stuff on Instagram in 2012, he explained. At some point, I decided to focus more on comics. It became one of the few things that felt completely mine while also combining my two biggest passions drawing and comedy.

When asked about his favorite comic, Ray shared that it’s the one he believes features his cleverest joke. It’s the one about why space aliens would need to put probes in abductees’ anal cavities, he explained. The idea that a hyper-intelligent, galaxy-traveling species would need information on something like that is so absurd. The comic dives into this and ends with an explanation of how Occam’s razor was first explained. I love making logical sense out of something ridiculous in a funny way that’s what I always aim for.
