We had the chance to learn more about the creator behind Positively Ghostly Greg Eales who shared a bit about himself and his journey. Hi, I’m Greg Eales I’m the animator, writer, and artist behind Positively Ghostly. At my core, I’m a dad to three wonderful kiddos who inspire me every day. Art has always been a huge part of my life I’ve been a lifelong fan of cartoons and comics and my walls are covered with everything from Peanuts to Dragon Ball Z. Greg’s path to creating Positively Ghostly has been an interesting one. I spent some of my youth in the Air Force before earning my animation degree, and now I work in learning technology. My day job involves bridging the gap between design and technology but my love for storytelling and animation always keeps me creating. Through Positively Ghostly, Greg has found a way to blend his passion for art with uplifting messages creating a space where positivity shines one ghostly comic at a time.

We wanted to learn more about the inspiration behind Positively Ghostly and its lovable main character Oliver. Greg Eales shared the heartfelt story behind his creation: Oliver was born during the pandemic in 2020. At that time, I was struggling with severe depression while working from home. The stress of the pandemic, combined with everything happening in the world, had a huge impact on my mental health. After a particularly rough day, I grabbed my sketchbook to unwind, letting my thoughts flow onto the page. That’s when Oliver appeared. He was different from anything I had drawn before a floating ghost in fancy clothes with a caption that simply read. Looking back, I think he was a reflection of everything I was feeling emotionally drained but still searching for a spark of joy. Oliver became a reminder that it’s okay to sit with your feelings to acknowledge sadness and even hopelessness. But at the same time, he also represents the idea that even in dark moments there’s always a glimmer of hope that things can get better.

Greg shared how he developed the concept for Positively Ghostly and how it grew from a simple idea into a full-fledged series. Positively Ghostly started with just Oliver. He was floating around the Realm of the Dead trying to uplift other spirits who seemed like they could use some positivity in their afterlife a reflection of our world in many ways. From there, I began building a cast of characters around Oliver, each inspired by different personality traits of my children. Like any proud dad, my kids are a huge source of inspiration, so I wanted to bring a part of them into this journey. Seeing their traits come to life in these ghostly characters has made the creative process even more special.
