Pedro Arizpe opened up about his creative process revealing that he views his comics as a combination of entertainment and deeper meaning. He explained Pure soapbox message comics don’t interest me but I sometimes try to tap into something with some depth and substance. In my experience, however, direct messages are boring and don’t land as effectively as when they are hidden deep inside an interesting, entertaining presentation. This approach allows Pedro to blend humor with thought-provoking ideas creating comics that entertain while offering something more for those who look a little deeper.

When asked about the first comic he ever created, Pedro Arizpe recalled, Yes, it’s the first one on my website simply called PAC-MAN from 15 years ago. He explained that many elements of his style were already present, including real-life observations what-if scenarios, and exploring the hidden inner workings of everyday things.

Pedro went on to share that while he initially created comics for his amusement it took a few more years before he could craft comics that communicated his message to his readers. This is why many of my early comics though creative and original, can sometimes be confusing in terms of the point I was trying to make he said. Over time, he learned how to present his ideas more effectively while still maintaining his unique voice.

Pedro Arizpe’s comics are known for their varying visual styles so we asked him how he decides on the look for each one. Time is the biggest deciding factor Pedro explained. For longer comics, I often skip color because it would take me too long to finish them. That said, color is sometimes essential to convey tone and mood. He also tailors the visual style based on the comic’s tone whether it’s realistic, simple, or highly stylized. Each style fits better with certain genres, and using the wrong one can be distracting. Pedro shared that when he first started, he experimented with different styles but it would take over a week to finish each comic as he learned through trial and error. I don’t experiment as much these days but if I have the time I’ll still add some experimental touches here and there he said.
