Ellen Woodbury is back with her hilarious PizzaCake Comics a series that many of you will likely recognize for its sharp dialogue, surprising twists, and relatable moments all wrapped up in humor. As Ellen previously shared, I love making people laugh and sharing funny/weird situations with others. The drawing part is really fun, but it’s incredibly satisfying to entertain people. With that in mind, let’s dive into her latest collection of comics. We caught up with Ellen again to dive deeper into her creative process as a cartoonist. One of the first things we were curious about was the strangest place or situation that had ever sparked an idea for one of her comics. Ellen kindly shared her thoughts. I get ideas in all sorts of places like at the doctor’s office, while grocery shopping, picking my kids up from school, or even on the toilet. Some people just can’t turn off their observations and internal commentary and for me, it’s been really useful.

When asked about her least favorite comic trope or cliché that she tries to avoid, the cartoonist responded: “Hmm, that’s a tough question. I wouldn’t say I actively avoid any tropes but I do try to steer clear of themes that other artists have explored too much. I also like to keep my content mostly free of swear words and I don’t stick to a single topic or theme, which makes it easier for me to avoid falling into the same old patterns.

Next, Woodbury shared her thoughts on the impact of AI-generated art and storytelling, and how it could shape the future of comic creation. I’m not sure AI will have a huge impact on comics and storytelling because most people still prefer content created by humans. It’s a form of genuine expression and a way to connect with others. A consistent art style and a well-written comic can carry a lot of emotion, creating a bond over shared topics. There’s something hollow about content churned out by AI it loses that intentional touch and cohesive design. Even if AI art becomes indistinguishable from human-made creations it will always have that uncanny valley feeling, which many people find unsettling.

Lastly, we asked Ellen which part of the comic creation process she feels is the most underrated She told us. This might sound a bit strange, but I love the writing process getting a good idea and fleshing it out. I find it exciting and engaging, while I know many other artists can get frustrated with writing and struggle with writer’s block. To me, you can’t force it. You have to let the ideas come naturally because that makes for a more immersive experience for your readers. I see using my voice and sharing my thoughts as a way to connect with others though I’m also a pretty opinionated loudmouth, so maybe that’s just me ha ha.
