Many comics are created to entertain and make us laugh but some artists use their work to express personal experiences and tackle meaningful topics. Kitty Moon, the illustrator behind the series Nurse Katz is a great example of this approach. Drawing from their experiences in the hospital the artist uses animal characters to capture the reality of their work as nurses. The comics cover everything from caring for patients to exploring the emotions of patients and their families offering a unique perspective on life in the ICU.

We reached out to Kitty Moon to learn more about their inspiration for creating these comics. The artist shared I’ve been drawing for a long time ever since I was a child. Back then it was a way to express what I couldn’t say with words. As an adult, it’s become a way for me to take a step back, reflect on my life, and process my emotions. Even in the darkest situations, there’s humor to be found. And where there’s humor there’s hope and a chance to see the potential for growth in every situation. Kitty Moon’s comics offer a window into the highs and lows of working in healthcare bringing humor and insight to the often difficult but deeply meaningful aspects of caring for others.

The artist opened up about how they come up with ideas for their comics revealing a deeply personal and therapeutic journey: “I started making comics when I went back to school to pursue nursing as a second degree I had a BFA. At first, it was a way for me to cope with the stress of school and as I began working as a nurse, it evolved into a form of therapy.

They went on to explain that the comics were a direct reflection of their own experiences. The comics translated what I was going through, both at work and in my personal life. It helped me process the constant suffering, death, and dying I encountered at work especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was working in an ICU in NYC. I love comics because they are immediate and accessible providing an instant outlet for my thoughts and emotions.
