For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a deep love for history. But let’s be honest, most historical narratives focus on the grand events the long wars the epic conquests, and the mighty leaders with their grand ambitions. But what about the everyday struggles? What about the Roman soldier who’s having a mid-battle existential crisis? Or Spartacus, who, in a rare moment of self-reflection, regrets his life choices during a particularly rough day leading the rebellion? And what about that emperor desperately trying to avoid awkward small talk at the Senate, or a scribe frantically scrambling for more ink just before a looming deadline?

These are the kinds of moments I wanted to bring to life in Hysterical Chronica. Through my comics, I aim to explore the fun relatable, and often overlooked aspects of history the moments that didn’t make it into textbooks but are just as if not more entertaining. It’s history with a twist, showing the humanity behind the grand narratives.

When creating my comic strips, I begin with a historical fact or event that piques my interest. From there, I ask myself a simple but powerful question. How would a person feel or react in this situation? It’s a blend of research and imagination attempting to capture the human side of history which often results in surprisingly relatable scenarios. Take, for instance, a gladiator facing stage fright before entering the arena or a Roman senator dreading yet another monotonous meeting at the Senate. These are the types of moments I like to explore, where we can see well-known historical figures grappling with feelings and situations that echo our daily struggles. Through this approach, I try to bring history to life in a way that feels both educational and humorous.
