Lucas Turnbloom, the creator of How to Cat, recently shared how things have evolved since his last update. I’ve had many more readers follow How to Cat since I last shared it with you. Sweetie the cat and I are very grateful and happy for the new fans he said expressing his excitement for the growing community of cat lovers enjoying his comics.
When it comes to his creative process Lucas revealed that much of his work begins with quiet reflection. A lot of my comic writing involves me just sitting around and thinking. Or walking around and thinking,” he shared. However, things don’t always flow smoothly. Sometimes I overthink things, and the ideas don’t come easily. Then, out of nowhere, Sweetie knocks over the lamp or a cup of coffee, and BAM inspiration hits. Lucas’s creative process is just as unpredictable and amusing as the content he produces, much like his beloved cat, Sweetie. The series continues to capture the hilarious and relatable moments of life with a feline companion and fans love every minute of it.

We asked Lucas Turnbloom if there had ever been a time when he scrapped a comic idea after starting it. His response was straightforward. Oh. I always aim for no more than four panels. If I can’t get to the punchline by panel three or four, the joke just doesn’t work for me. I admire people who can do long-form comics well but I just can’t make it work in my style. For Lucas, keeping things short and sweet is key to delivering a punchline that lands just right. His preference for brevity reflects the straightforward, sharp humor that fans of How to Cat have come to love.

Lucas Turnbloom shared the key influences that have shaped his approach to comics and storytelling. When I was a kid, I was all about Peanuts, Garfield, The Far Side, and Calvin and Hobbes. They were the ones that first drew me into the world of comics. Nowadays, I’m inspired by creators like Beetlemoses, Fowl Language, The Awkward Yeti, Sarah Scribbles, and Chris Hallbeck. Those are some of the best in the business. These influences are evident in Lucas’s work, as he blends humor reliability, and the charm of everyday life into his How to Cat comics.
