20 Darkly Hilarious Comics With Unexpected Twists By Colm Lavery (New Pics)

Welcome to the world of Colmscomics, where everyday situations take on wild and absurd twists. Created by Colm Lavery Colmscomics is known for tackling modern topics and turning them into short, punchy 4-panel comics filled with humor and unexpected turns. While these quick witty strips have earned Colm a dedicated following he’s also diving into longer story-driven comics such as his ongoing series Witch Beth.

If you’re craving more be sure to check out his social media for additional projects. When we asked Colm about the essence or theme behind his work he explained for my short funny comics the most common theme is subverting expectations and pushing boundaries just a bit. I don’t want to cross any major lines but I think the biggest laughs come when you push just a little into the edgy or inappropriate zone.

Colm Lavery explained further saying, That’s where my humor usually comes from subverting expectations. With four panels, I can quickly set up an idea and then completely flip it on its head in the last one. Of course, I don’t do it all the time because if I did readers would start expecting a twist and that would spoil the surprise. As for my Witch Beth comic,it’s a fun mix of lighthearted horror with a dash of dark humor all heavily inspired by the Discworld novels which I love.

Colm Lavery shared some insights into his artistic journey. As you can probably tell from the quality of my work, I didn’t go to art school. I’ve always loved art, and I’m mostly self-taught. I studied it through GCSE and A-levels (I’m from Northern Ireland so high school for anyone across the pond. But sadly, there weren’t many art jobs available so I gave up on pursuing it as a career. However, I always kept it as a hobby.

Then, I started noticing more and more webcomics online, like Randowis and Adamtots and thought it would be fun to contribute to that community. It would give me a reason to draw, improve my skills, and have a chance to showcase my sense of humor. Funny enough, as much as I loved comics growing up the thought of drawing them was exhausting to me. The idea of repeating the same images across panels sounded tedious and stressful. Now, here I am drawing comics every week after work, already tired before I even begin haha.

Colm Lavery shared a glimpse into his creative process for crafting comics. Ever seen a cartoon character going about its day until a light bulb magically appears above its head during its eureka moment’? Well, that’s pretty much how it works for me except my light bulb flickers a lot like a sad fluorescent light in an old office with all the buzzing sound included.

The joke or idea will often pop into my head out of nowhere, especially when I’m doing something that doesn’t require much attention like driving or listening to someone talk. Other times, it happens when I’m chatting with a group of friends and I crack an offhand joke that doesn’t land. So, I deal with the sting of rejection by drawing it out and posting it online, hoping for even more feedback on why it didn’t work preferably in soul-crushing detail.
