We caught up with the artist behind the comics to learn more about his creative process and the inspiration behind his work. When asked about blending horror with humor in his comics Jared shared his enthusiasm. I love horror with a twist especially horror comics that take a wholesome approach which might sound contradictory but it works so well. Mike Mignola is probably my biggest influence when it comes to drawing horror-themed comics. His stories are dark and gruesome yet he always sneaks in a funny or wholesome moment to lighten the mood. I haven’t drawn many horror-themed comics yet but I plan on following a similar structure to Mike.

When it comes to social media trends, the artist shared his perspective. I always struggle to follow trends. Every time I try to create things based on what people want I end up burning myself out. I’ve done a lot of experimenting but now I’m at a point where I’m comfortable with my style and know what I like to draw. I’d much rather focus on creating what I truly enjoy and want to share with the world. While it feels great to brighten someone else’s day I think it’s important for me to stay true to what I love rather than just meeting other’s expectations. It may be a bit selfish but it’s what has kept me motivated all these years.

Jared shared how his group chat with fellow comic creators has been a major source of motivation. Being part of a group of comic artists has been my #1 source of motivation. I send them unfinished comics and they help me refine them in ways I might have missed. They’ve also emphasized the importance of drawing comics that you want to see in the world rather than just trying to please people on social media. I’ve seen many in the group burn out chasing trends and some even quit altogether. The ones who draw for the fun of it though are the ones who don’t burn out and continue to grow their audience even if it’s slower than the influencers who chase trends.
