HJ, the creator behind Birdchonk, opened up about what initially drew him to art. I’ve been creating and drawing ever since I was little as art supplies were one of the few things we were never short on growing up he explained. I still have those supplies now, even though I mostly work digitally. However, HJ admitted that he was too self-conscious to share his work for many years. It wasn’t until the pandemic that I realized how little time we have and that gave me the push to start this comic even when I didn’t feel fully ready. This shift in perspective led HJ to dive into the world of Birdchonk and share his quirky relatable bird comics with the world.

HJ shared some insight into his creative process for Birdchonk, explaining that he keeps a large list of ideas, adding to it whenever he comes across something funny in his daily life. When I pick an idea, I draft out the layout and text of the comic, then go straight into lining and coloring, he said. One key factor in his process, especially when he first started, was simplicity. I wanted to keep the process as simple as possible so that I could create more consistently, HJ explained. This approach allows him to consistently produce the fun and relatable comics that Birdchonk fans love.

When asked about what he hopes audiences take away from his Birdchonk comics HJ shared that Sometimes real life can get stressful and overwhelming so I hope my comics remind people to pause and find humor in the little things happening right under their noses. He also expressed a desire to raise awareness about New Zealand’s native birds. They’re unique and funny to watch but sadly very endangered he added. To wrap up HJ offered a simple but meaningful message. Be kind and keep moving forward.
