Jon Baker shared the story behind the title of his webcomic Alarmingly Bad, revealing that it was born from a mix of self-awareness and humor. When I started my drawing skills left something to be desired. You can see it in my earlier work and honestly, even almost 9 years later, I’m still probably never gonna get my work hung up in a museum anywhere. So knowing how the internet can be, I decided to lean into it and wear the title proudly instead he explained. This playful embrace of imperfection is part of what makes Alarmingly Bad so endearing. The title itself reflects the artist’s willingness to take risks, own his mistakes, and deliver humor that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Jon Baker shared how his art has naturally improved over time, though he emphasizes that it wasn’t due to focused practice. He explained It’s more of a function of when you do something long enough you just get generally better at it. However, the themes and writing behind Alarmingly Bad have remained consistent. I write for an audience of one: myself, he said. I’m thrilled others enjoy my work too, but the only thing I care about when making a comic is, ‘Do I like it?’ and ‘Does it make me laugh?’ As long as I’m doing that, I just let creativity guide me.
