We had the chance to speak with Cody Drake, the artist behind Radbot, to learn more about his creative journey. When asked how he first got into making comics he gave credit to his biggest supporters his parents. You know what you have my parents to blame. They were always incredibly supportive and encouraging. So much so that as a kid I believed them when they told me I was good at drawing. Turns out, they were mostly just being nice but her practice makes perfect. Cody spent years honing his skills sketching SpongeBob, Pokémon, Teen Titans, and more. After about two decades of practice, he finally felt he had lived up to the praise. That’s when he shifted from drawing other people’s creations to coming up with his robots with buff arms, aliens, Dungeons & Dragons characters, and more. It was only a matter of time before I put them all into a comic he shared. And thus Radbot was born a quirky humorous series packed with unexpected twists and a unique artistic style.

We were curious about the recurring themes in Radbot comics, and Cody Drake gave us a glimpse into his creative process. I almost don’t want to share this because it kinda feels like a magician revealing their secret, but there’s a bit of a formula to a good amount of my comics and it’s really simple. I just invented a scenario where someone can misinterpret something. It’s just a matter of subverting expectations. Drake shared an example of his comedic approach A person asks to borrow a dictionary and is handed a book filled with a bunch of dks. A dk-tionary. Humor ensues. Hey, they can’t all be wieners. And, of course, there’s one more crucial ingredient. Oh, and puns. Lots of puns. Highest form of humor. With a mix of wordplay, unexpected twists, and absurd scenarios Radbot keeps readers laughing while never taking itself too seriously.

Ever wonder how Cody Drake comes up with ideas for Radbot? The artist shared some insight into his creative process and surprisingly it doesn’t involve sitting down and brainstorming. I rarely spend time trying to come up with ideas. I’m probably at my least funny when I’m trying to be funny. I pretty much just keep my ears peeled for dumb funny stuff that crops up in conversations with my friends. We’re a pretty silly bunch, so it doesn’t take that long to dig up some gold. Drake also credited some of his biggest comedic influences I feel like my humor is 80% SpongeBob and 20% wishing I was as funny and clever as Andrew Hussie. Not Homestuck era Hussie I’m talking Problem Sleuth. Huge fan. With a mix of spontaneous inspiration absurd humor and a love for clever storytelling, it’s no surprise that Radbot has carved out its own unique space in the world of webcomics.
