We reached out to Riri to learn more about their comic series. The artist shared some insights into the recurring themes and motifs in their work. The underlying theme of my comics is the joy of being transgender despite the hardships. There’s always an element of transformation in my work whether it’s of body beliefs feelings or how others treat us. These big life changes can be jarring and uncertain but I focus on the brighter side, highlighting the good and funny moments that come with these changes. Trans people like me need joy right now.

Many of my comic ideas stem from real-life experiences, though I add a bit of fantastical flair to capture the big emotions of those moments. Other ideas come from reinterpreting stories of well-known characters through a queer lens, often turning existing subtexts into literal text.

Riri shared that most of their comics are semi-autobiographical with themselves and their real-life loved ones appearing as characters. However, they also create other characters as parodies of recognizable pop culture figures such as superheroes or video game characters. Lastly, the artist shared their thoughts on why humor is such an effective medium for storytelling I believe positive feelings have more impact and are often more memorable and persuasive than negative ones. People are more likely to engage with things that brighten their day and lighten their load. Funny and heartwarming stories are great at easing some of life’s tension.
