Looking for slice-of-life comics? You’re in luck! We’re excited to introduce you to Elise Ngo a talented cartoonist from Toronto who brings to life the lighthearted and relatable series A Cookie a Day. The series highlights funny moments drawn from real everyday experiences. We reached out to Elise to learn more about her work. The artist shared insights into the themes she enjoys exploring. As a slice-of-life comic, my work often focuses on small moments from my daily life. Some of my comics celebrate simple pleasures and joys with a wholesome tone. I also write about my anxieties stress insecurities and the little annoyances of everyday life. I like to poke fun at those struggles. If I can present those worries in a way that people can connect with, bringing humor without downplaying them, I think that’s wholesome too. I love hearing when people find my work funny and relatable. Elise also added, and of course, my endless love for desserts is a recurring theme.

The artist shared the inspiration behind the series. I’ve always been a huge fan of comics since I was a kid. I grew up reading comic strips like Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts, comic book series like Teen Titans The Powerpuff Girls, and Sonic the Hedgehog as well as graphic novels like The Baby-Sitter’s Club Amelia Rule,s and manga. I’ve always loved stories and drawing and comics combine the best of both worlds. Using art to tell a story just feels like the perfect medium for me. As ki,d I loved creating my comic projects and characters in genres like magical girl fantasy superheroes and middle school life. She continued, Somewhere near the start of my university years, I thought it would be fun to create my silly slice-of-life comics. My everyday life had plenty of comedic moments to draw from and with encouragement from my friends, I finally decided to give it a go. And that’s how A Cookie a Day was born.

When asked how she comes up with ideas for new cartoons Ngo explained that most of her ideas come from her daily life. She said, The small joys worries, and annoyance there’s also a lot of ‘struggles of growing up’ humor in there. My comics reflect what’s going on in my life at the time. I keep a note on my phone with a running list of comic ideas sometimes something funny happens and I think I’ve got to write this down. Other times, I’ll sit and brainstorm and the question that guides me is usually, What’s an everyday situation from my life that could be framed humorously?

Lastly, the creator of A Cookie a Day shared more about her influences in the world of comics and humor. My biggest influence is Sarah Andersen the creator of Sarah’s Scribbles. I stumbled upon one of her strips one day and immediately fell in love with both the humor and art style. I sought out more of her work and now I have her comic collections in print. I’ve always loved comics but it was her relatable humor that inspired me to start making web comics myself. I’m also a huge fan of Shen Comix and The Pigeon Gazette because they’re hilarious.
