Steve Ogden is an artist writer and musician making his mark in the Baltimore area. Alongside his many creative talents today we’re introducing you to his comics. Steve shared that although he loves creating comics there have been times when he took breaks due to frustration. I’ve occasionally gotten frustrated at the lack of interest some of my comics have received and have backed away from them he said. But on balance, I’d rather make comics than not because when I stop I feel much less happy. Let’s show Steve some love. His comics are fun and we think you’ll enjoy them too.

Steve Ogden has a diverse and impressive background that spans over four decades in the creative industry. He shared a bit about his journey. I currently work for Sid Meier’s Firaxis Games and have been there for over 22 years now! Before that, I worked for Cyan, the developers of Myst and Riven in Spokane WA a real dream job for me at the time. I’ve always loved narrative-driven art and it was amazing to work in that space. He continued, Before that I worked for a handful of other companies painted signs designed t-shirts, and even dug ditches just like everyone said I would when I chose to be an artist. It’s been a long career starting professionally in 1980. I make comics in my spare time. Steve’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence and passion and we’re lucky to get a glimpse into his creative world!

We were curious about what first sparked Steve’s love for cartooning and art. He shared, that I’ve loved cartoons since I was a kid. I grew up reading newspaper comics like Peanuts. I was drawn to Doonesbury Bloom County The Far Side and most importantly, Calvin and Hobbes. These comics had a huge influence on how I write draw and approach both character and humor. Steve’s early exposure to these iconic strips shaped his unique style blending humor with heart in his comics.

Steve Ogden also opened up about his creative process, quoting Stephen King’s take on where ideas come from. When you ask authors where they get their ideas, they’ll inevitably make up something because they know that they don’t know. Steve added I can only echo that. I don’t know where the ideas come from but they just don’t stop. I’m inspired by everything. I get 15 ideas by breakfast. He went on to explain that sometimes stepping away from the computer is key to refreshing his mind. When I’ve spent too long online or at my desk, I end up writing cartoons about writing cartoons. That’s so meta, I don’t believe it has broad appeal Steve laughed. But when my family and I go running hiking biking or kayaking around the state it always clears my mind and helps me think of new different ideas. Clearly for Steve inspiration can strike at any time from anywhere.
