We were curious about what motivated the artist behind 5ish Art to start her Instagram account and Findlay shared some insight into her journey. She explained I’ve had this art account for as long as I can remember primarily as a way to share my art everywhere. Even though it can be exhausting at times I think it’s important to spread out across multiple platforms rather than put all your eggs in one basket. Findlay continued Posting little comics loosely and sometimes not so loosely based on the events in my own life which has been a cathartic experience for me. When it comes to sharing my art, I try to be very candid and transparent. I guess the humorous tone in my comics serves as a sort of coping mechanism that’s tailored to me. Her openness about the personal nature of her art and the humorous approach she takes to share life’s challenges have resonated with her followers making her work relatable and engaging.

A lot of Findlay’s comics revolve around her and her partner’s everyday life making us curious about how he influences her creative process and how he feels about being featured in the comics. Findlay shared, My husband plays a big role in my four-panel yapping because we’re always getting into silly back-and-forths due to our relationship dynamic. I often tell him that using living people as muses can be risky because you never know how fragile the relationship between creator and muse might be. But here he is a constant fixture in our love and life serving as an endless source of inspiration. It’s clear that their dynamic not only shapes their relationship but also fuels the creative spark behind Findlay’s relatable and humorous comics.

Findlay shared, that I ask my husband all the time if he’s okay with being featured in whatever comic I’m working on especially if it’s based on something that happened between us in real life. You could say he’s like an editor in that sense but he tries not to interfere with my creative process when inspiration hits. Overall, he’s incredibly supportive of everything I do, even if he doesn’t always understand it. He’s the one who encouraged me to pursue art as a full-time career 10 years ago! And now here I am a full-time freelance illustrator and between paid projects a typically four-panel yapper. Findlay’s husband plays an important role in both her personal and professional life offering support and encouragement as she continues to create relatable humorous content for her growing audience.
