Daniel Matheson is back with his comic series Barely Baked Beans bringing fresh absurd situations witty dialogue and unexpected twists. If you’ve enjoyed his previous work now’s the perfect time to dive into his latest creations. We reached out to Daniel to chat about his comic series and the recurring themes that pop up in his strips. He shared, At a glance the concept is about two dogs trying to live their best lives with their human. But if you look a little closer, the recurring theme is how I illustrate the modern-day relationship between humans and their pets which I think a lot of people can relate to. Daniel Matheson elaborated on the changing relationship between humans and their pets over the years, the dynamic has shifted from master and pet to man’s best friend and now pets are more like housemates who contribute nothing tangible but still feel just as central to the household as their human. For example, if you’re out working all day your pet will likely feel exhausted from having to watch the house while you’re gone just like you do when you return home after a long day.

When asked about how his art style has evolved since he started creating Barely Baked Beans, Daniel shared I wouldn’t call myself a great artist. I didn’t even start drawing until just a few years ago. The progression has been like watching a puppy learn to run there was a lot of stumbling and some panels probably looked like they were drawn by a dog. Over time though, I’ve found a balance between simplicity and expressiveness that feels comfortable though I’d still argue that sometimes it feels like it’s barely baked pun intended.

When asked about the key elements he finds most effective in creating humor for his comics Daniel Matheson shared. I’ve discovered that the best humor for me often comes from observing the everyday and giving it a twist that fits the tone of my work. For example, if your dog finds a tablet in their food what’s their immediate reaction? For me, it was a betrayal. So, what’s the natural next step? Put some drugs in their human food and ‘see how much they like it.

In a previous post, Daniel Matheson shared his experience with animation. We were curious about how this background impacts the way he creates his static comics especially when it comes to pacing and visual storytelling. Daniel explained Learning to animate has made me more aware of how shows like The Simpsons and American Dad use angles to make scenes more visually dynamic. Now, when I draw comics, I experiment with perspective to keep the setup visually interesting before the punchline lands. It’s a subtle technique that helps build energy and keeps things engaging from start to finish.
