We reached out to Andrea to dive deeper into her comic journey. She opened up about what inspired her to begin creating comics: I started drawing little comics for my friends in high school, exaggerating funny situations that happened in class. I was always doodling on handouts while my teachers were talking, and my best friend and I passed elaborate drawings back and forth during study hall I even posted about that on BuzzFeed. I also created some detailed pieces of art in M.S. Paint RIP. Eventually, I had the chance to draw comics professionally as an illustrator at BuzzFeed.

Hickey shared more about the beginnings of her artistic career. While video content was booming at BuzzFeed LA there was a strong push in the New York office, where I worked to create original content in other formats. The illustrators were encouraged to develop comics that followed BuzzFeed’s relatable content style catering to their broad audience and specific niches like food books, beauty entertainment style, and more. Just like with our regular posts, we were always experimenting to see which topics and jokes sparked the right emotional reactions in our comics.

We were curious to learn which artists from the worlds of comics and comedy have influenced Hickey’s style and served as her biggest inspirations. She shared Growing up, I was inspired by Nickelodeon cartoons like Rocko’s Modern Life Doug and SpongeBob SquarePants, especially for their comedic timing and how they exaggerated moments of tension and anxiety. As for comic artists, I’m a huge fan of Emily Carroll Jillian Tamaki Sammy Harkha, and Rebecca Mock. And since it’s fall, I have to mention Over the Garden Wall.
