Return of Stiqz is back to deliver its signature chaotic humor and absurdity. Created by the artist Stiq Auteur the comic features vibrant stick figures and is updated weekly on Instagram. Stiq describes the series as A dumb comic about morons being stupid. We had the opportunity to chat with the cartoonist and asked them to sum up their work in three words. Their answer is Mischief mayhem and merriment. As they explain, The core idea is that the characters are not just caught up in chaos they actively create and enjoy it. Well, most of them do anyway.

We were curious about what inspired the cartoonist to start creating their comics and here’s what we discovered. I’ve been an avid reader of newspaper comics and comic books for as long as I can remember. But what sparked my interest was the webcomic boom of the mid-2000s. It made me realize that comics didn’t have to be a large-scale operation. Anyone with an idea and a website could create a comic! I started working on Return of Stiqz strips back in 2007, but I didn’t post them because they were way too niche half of my friends didn’t even get them. After college life got busy and I put the idea on hold for a while. However, I was inspired again by how people could build audiences on social media so I decided to rework the comic and make it more accessible.

When we asked the artists where they usually find inspiration for new strips they shared. I typically come up with a comic in one of two ways either I start with a mundane situation and try to make it wild and chaotic or I take a common phrase and see if I can twist it to create a new meaning without changing the words too much. I make sure to write down all of my ideas because you never know when something that initially seems like a dead-end could turn into a fully realized comic.

Stiq Auteur opened up about some of the major influences that shaped their comedic style. The original inspiration for Return of Stiqz came from blending the simplicity and wit of XKCD with the expressive rough MS Paint aesthetic of rage comics. On top of that, I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from shows like SpongeBob and Tom & Jerry.
