Sharing experiences has become a crucial part of modern life, whether through social media snapshots or personal stories jotted down in journals that could one day be shared with the world. For some, these stories take a creative form like turning everyday experiences into comics that capture life’s subtle nuances. Daniel Mok the artist behind the Mokumentary comic series certainly nails this art form. When asked to describe his series in just three words, Daniel said random subtle and added For me jokes are funniest when they’re grounded in reality. They turn into shared experiences. I try to create situations or characters that make people think Ah, I’ve seen that in real life before. Daniel continued to offer more insight into his series. I prefer jokes that aren’t too in-your-face. I like it when the reader has to think a little and is rewarded when they get it. The key is finding that sweet spot simple enough to be understood but not too literal or slapstick. As for the randomness I love the freedom to explore any topic or genre without being confined to specific characters or settings.

When asked what initially inspired him to start creating comics Daniel Mok didn’t hesitate to share his story, I started drawing for fun in 2019 when I got my iPad. But it wasn’t until the Covid lockdown in 2021 that I began to take it seriously. One day, while driving to pick up takeout, I saw a food delivery person in a mask waiting at a traffic light. I couldn’t help but snicker and think to myself Haha a masked rider. That moment sparked the idea for a series about childhood dreams being crushed wanting to be a Masked Rider but instead becoming a masked rider. The series titled Don’t Let Your Dreams Become Memes went viral and from there everything just took off.

Daniel shared where he draws inspiration for his comic ideas I’d say most of my inspiration comes from spotting moments of disappointment or frustration in life. At the end of the day, we’re all a bit guilty of finding humor in the misfortune of others.
