This Artist Brings Humor and Relatability to Comics Drawn From Her Own Experiences (20 New Comics)

Mary Comics is a webcomic created by Romanian artist Mary Nicola, who began sharing her work on Instagram in 2018. Her comics capture the everyday quirks and mishaps of life in a way that’s both personal and hilariously relatable. From fumbling through social situations to agonizing over outfit choices or battling procrastination Mary’s humor is sharp light-hearted and spot-on.

Each comic feels like a glimpse into a friend’s diary filled with moments that make you think Yep that’s me. Many of the stories feature Mary herself giving her work a warm human touch as it tackles universal experiences. If you’ve ever found yourself in those awkward yet funny moments of life her comics will feel like home.

We couldn’t help but ask Mary about the challenges she faces as an artist. She opened up about the biggest struggle she’s currently dealing with: managing her time. I work full-time as an illustrator at a publishing house take on art commissions and go to the gym every day after work. It’s really hard to juggle all of that which is why I’ve been a bit inconsistent with posting comics she explained. Despite these challenges, Mary shared that creating comics remains her favorite part of her work. Honestly, I enjoy drawing those exaggerated expressions the most she added.

Mary’s comics are deeply rooted in her personal experiences, so we asked her how it feels to share these moments with the world. I feel great because it’s amazing to see that people can relate. There were times when I created very specific comics about experiences I thought only I had and then I realized that many others had been through the same thing. It’s a reminder that, while we may be different, we’re not that different after all haha she shared.

However, sharing more personal stories can also bring some anxiety. Sometimes I feel anxious, especially with comics that touch on more personal topics, like my bullying experience or weight loss. But it’s me, and I want people to follow me and get to know the real me. I’m not perfect I’ve had struggles, just like everyone else. I hope that as time goes on, I’ll have more confidence to share even more stories.
